SUPPORTING THE FAST GROWTH OF NITRADO, A WORLD-LEADING GAME-SERVER HOSTING PROVIDER

Nitrado are a world-leading game server and application hosting provider who have been in operation for over 15 years. They host games on their own high-specification servers, meeting the needs of the most demanding gaming customers. At the latest count, Nitrado host nearly 40,000 CPU cores, 400,000GB of RAM and 1PB of SSD storage. Growth is such that their data centre footprint has doubled over the past three years.

FACILITATING NITRADO’S FIRST STEPS IN THE UK:
A QUARTER RACK IN TELEHOUSE

Nitrado shipped their first server to the UK in 2015. This was housed in an Amito Quarter Rack in Telehouse. At the time of their initial installation, Nitrado’s primary focus was on the latency of their network connections. Telehouse is a leading UK interconnection facility and one of 12 London data centres where Amito offers part-rack colocation.

The quarter rack that Amito provided in Telehouse was a secure home for the initial server deployment into this new market. It also offered all the benefits of the UK’s and Europe’s leading network ecosystem – and all on a cost-effective basis.

CREATING THE SCOPE FOR GROWTH:
THE MOVE TO AMITO’S READING DATA CENTRE

The most notable feature of Nitrado’s servers is that they are very power-hungy. When Nitrado wanted to add further servers to their quarter rack due to the success of their launch in the UK, it was time for a rethink!

Telehouse is superb for network access (Amito run over 60 racks in Telehouse) but is relatively limited on power per-rack due to the age of the facility. It’s also costly on a per kilowatt basis. Amito’s own 1,000-rack Reading data centre became an attractive option due to a number of factors:

Superb value on a per-rack or per-kW basis, with unlimited onsite support
Ability to easily scale from 2kW to 7kW per cabinet
DDoS protection service
Ultra-low latency and redundant network connections to Telehouse and the Equinix Slough campus
Stability in network latency due to Amito’s control over their own self-lit dark-fibre network

FLEXIBLE RACK SOLUTIONS FROM 8 TO 32AMPS

After a period of testing to satisfy Nitrado with the quality of Amito’s network from Reading to the Internet, an initial low-power 2kW rack was put in place. This accommodated the initial server installations far more comfortably and at significantly lower cost than remaining in Docklands.

Because all Amito Reading clients have access to their power readings in real time, it was easy for Nitrado to request additional power up to 7kW per cabinet as and when they needed (either when adding new systems or adding further capacity to existing ones). Nitrado’s presence has now grown to several full racks in Amito’s Reading data centre, and they have recently upgraded their core routers in anticipation of further significant expansion.

Superb onsite support

As Nitrado have continued to grow in the UK, all onsite support has been provided by the Amito team based in Reading. This has included racking all new servers; working with Nitrado to add additional memory; shutting down each node in turn; and liaising with Nitrado staff via Amito’s customer portal, which provides real time communication and gives all parties a record of each step of any work that is undertaken.

PROVIDING AN AUTOMATIC RESPONSE TO ATTACKS:
AMITO’S DDoS PROTECTION SERVICE

Besides being demanding, gamers also seem to have a vindictive streak! Nitrado’s systems are therefore regular users of Amito’s high-capacity DDoS protection service. This involves Amito’s proprietary in-house DDoS filter solution, together with an additional layer of support from a specialist mitigation partner.

Once detected by Amito’s monitoring systems (usually by traffic pattern) any attack is automatically transferred to Amito’s DDoS mitigation partner to deal with the initial volume, then identify and isolate the threat. Outbound traffic remains unaffected and the whole process of detection, shifting and mitigation is automatic and quick – usually defeating the attack within minutes, as the example below shows.
